چکیده

This paper contains the results of experiments with several search strategies on problems involving condensed detachment The problems are taken from nine di erent logic calculi three versions of the two valued sentential calculus the many valued sentential calculus the implicational calculus the equivalential calculus the R calculus the left group calculus and the right group calculus Each problem was given to the theorem prover Otter and was run with at least three strategies a basic strategy a strategy with a more re ned method for selecting clauses on which to focus and a strategy that uses the re ned selection mechanism and deletes deduced formulas according to some simple rules Two new features of Otter are also presented the re ned method for selecting the next formula on which to focus and a method for controlling memory usage

Towards Full Automation of Deduction: A Case Study

We present rst steps towards fully automated deduction that merely requires the user to submit proof problems and pick up results. Essentially, this necessitates the automation of the crucial step in the use of a deduction system, namely choosing and connguring an appropriate search-guiding heuristic. Furthermore, we motivate why learning capabilities are pivotal for satisfactory performance. T...

Vanquishing the XCB Question: The Methodology Discovery of the Last Shortest Single Axiom for the Equivalential Calculus

With the inclusion of an effective methodology, this article answers in detail a question that, for a quarter of a century, remained open despite intense study by various researchers. Is the formula XCB = e(x, e(e(e(x, y), e(z, y)), z)) a single axiom for the classical equivalential calculus when the rules of inference consist of detachment (modus ponens) and substitution? Where the function e ...

Experiments in the Heuristic Use of Past Proof Experience

Problems stemming from the study of logic calculi in connection with an inference rule called \condensed detachment" are widely acknowledged as prominent test sets for automated deduction systems and their search guiding heuristics. It is in the light of these problems that we demonstrate the power of heuristics that make use of past proof experience with numerous experiments. We present two su...

Inference Rights for Controlling Search in Generating Theorem Provers

We investigate the usage of so-called inference rights. We point out the problems arising from the innexibility of existing approaches to heuristically control the search of automated deduction systems, and we propose the application of inference rights that are well-suited for controlling the search more exibly. Moreover , inference rights allow for a mechanism of \partial forgetting" of facts...

Semantically Constrained Condensed Detachment Is Incomplete Semantically Constrained Condensed Detachment Is Incomplete

In reporting on the theorem prover SCOTT (Slaney, SCOTT: A Semantically Guided Theorem Prover, Proc. IJCAI, 1993) we suggested semantic constraint as as an appropriate mechanism for guiding proof searches in propositional systems where the rule of inference is condensed detachment|a generalisation of Modus Ponens. Such constrained condensed detachment is closely analogous to semantic resolution...
